SMSF Statistics To March 2025
ASIC recently released its SMSF statistics for March 2025. This quarterly update also revises past data due to delays in processing SMSF funds.
The March 2025 quarter shows a continued rise in new establishments, reaching 9,956—its highest for this quarter and 1,754 above last year’s record of 8,202. Net establishments remain strong. However, SMSF 'windups' usually happen in the June quarter and are reported later.

It's important to note, that the SMSF sector often reports assets surpassing $1 trillion over the last three quarters, this figure is for gross assets. After subtracting borrowings and other liabilities, current net assets is now at $968.7 Bil, falling from $975.8 in Dec 2024 and the record of $979.5 in the Sep 2024 quarter. Year-on-year, it is greater than the March 2024 quarter which was at $943.5 Bil.
The slight reduction in total net assets may be surprising given the growth in SMSF funds. It is likely due to the markets. For example, the ASX was above 8,000 points at end of Sep and Dec 2024 and at 7,843 for March 31, 2025.
