SMSF Statistics To June 2025

ATO recently released SMSF statistics for June 2025, which included updating full-year data for 2023/24. The June 2025 quarter showed 11,000 new SMSF setups, up from 10,855 in June 2024. This growth highlights strong opportunities for advisers in the SMSF market.

For the first time, SMSF ‘net assets’ exceeded one trillion dollars. However, the net flow of funds for SMSFs was negative. This growth highlights strong opportunities for advisers in the SMSF market.

  • D1, D2 - The SMSF opportunity is still growing for existing advisers.

    • For this quarter there is potentially a total of 43.03 SMSFs per adviser compared to 40.05 for June 2024. Back in June 2020 the number was 26.49

    • In assets - there is a potential of $66.88 Mil per adviser, in June 2024 it was $62.70 Mil, and back in June 2020 it was only $31.77 Mil.

  • D3 - The rate of SMSF establishments still growing -In this quarter 11,000 SMSFs were established, a new record for any quarter and just above June 2024 which was at 10,855. The number of windups (exits) is only showing as 1,129, but this will grow as reporting of windups does have a considerable lag.

  • D4 - Total Net Assets now above one trillion - Jumping from $972 Bil to $1,015 Bil and up from $962 Bil as of June 2024.

  • D4 Average balance per SMSF and by member improve -

    • The average SMSF is at $1,554,238 up from $1,511,556 in the March quarter. However, the current average is below June 2024 which was at $1,565,374.

    • By member the average balance is at $843,647 up from the March balance of $819,618. The June 2024 balance was at $849,108.

    • Note: median balances are much lower than averages see D6 for details. The details for 2023/24 have been updated and are at $932,572 per SMSF and $529,433 per member. The averages are skewed by a small number of very large SMSFs.

  • D10 New establishments for the quarter by gender - Male at 55.1%

  • D11 Quarterly establishments by personal income and gender - Males earning between $100K and $150k at 27.6% being the largest group followed by females in same income rage at 21.2%.

  • D12 Flow of Funds - The flow of funds have been updated by the ATO for the full 2023/24 year. The net flow is negative at (-$22.7 Bil). This is a large increase on the 2022/23 year which was negative (-$12.3 Bil). The increase in outflows flow was caused by a jump in benefits being paid out at $57.66 Bil, compared to $42.82 Bil in 2022/23

  • D10 Age groups - Current age by members shows that 50.8% are now over age 60

  • D14 - Fund and Assets By States - NSW's share of new SMSFs was again high at 37.6% up from the usual 33.4% shown annually for 2023-24. This increase came mostly at the expense of VIC, which fell to 25.5%.
